Speedwell steering wheel boss (Flat-4)

Postby Critter1 » Sun Nov 01, 2009 6:50 pm

Anthony, how have these Flat-4 Speedwell steering wheels been selling? I have yet to see one mounted in a car.

Are you selling the boss for the Speedwell wheel separately? Remember, I have a NOS Cosmic wheel that has a Volvo boss and I'm going to need a VW boss either made, or find something comparable. Based on what I remember from seeing it at 2009 Classic, it seems to be close to the same size. I'll bring my Cosmic wheel to the 2010 Classic so you can have a look at it.

nothing yet... the 1st step to making the boss for that wheel was to finish the vdm carriage boss... as its 70% the same programming on the CNC... now that were finished with the carriage... its in the works...

also FLAT 4 has delayed shipment of the final production on speedwell steering wheels... with no ETA

we received our Flat 4 shipment with the new formula steering wheel & boss kit and I have to say I am not impressed... I doubt this is how the originals were done... the wheel itself is great... its the boss kit that is lacking ( as usual )

ill show photos to do the talking... basically the boss kit is made up from multiple pieces... most for dress... with an old ( grant ) style cast center that actually mounts the wheel to the column splines...

on to the photos...

the flat 4 boss kit basics... top & bottom half for dress up, the cast center and hardware... roll pins are late model cancels for the t/s switch...
Image

reference marks I made on the top half...
Image

wheel sandwich between boss half's...
Image

3 screws thru boss top, wheel & bottom... screw directly into cast center
Image

boss assembled to the wheel, showing daylight??? !@#$%^*!
Image

ohh where do I start... the top half of the boss is too fat and does not compensate for the curves of the spokes of the wheel, so this pushes the boss top off the wheel, same issue with the bottom, but the opposite... with the spokes of the wheel curving upward, the boss lays flat and leaves a gap between the base and bottom center of the wheel...

to top it off the screws are too short ( or in this case ) just long enough to get a couple of threads into the cast center... but not enough in my book to be safe... also the horn button is slightly larger the top of the boss.. so the boss steps down under the button...

we will correct all these issues with our own USA made boss kit as usual... until then I do not think we are going to list these for sale... while the wheel will work with the flat 4 boss and horn button as offered... they left allot of room for improvement
